This is the 15th year for the Department of Oriental Languages and Literature to present a theatrical performance, Chief Secretary Lin said: “The theatrical performance has become department’s tradition, and TCU is happy to have this annual event, as it reflects our students’ learning. I wish that our students will gain more confidence and do things vigorously.”

Professor Li-Hsiou Huang and Professor Akiyoshi Yaotani were with students from the beginning to the end. Professor Huang said that the actors and actresses were graduating seniors who used their Japanese language, acting and body language to play their roles. Other students took part in playwrighting, practice, making of costumes and scenery, operating lighting and sound. The results reflected students’ learning and their faculty’s endeavors. Throughout the whole process, students worked together and helped each other, as they regularly do.

“Silver Plate and Red Radish” is a 90 minute work of Yuta Matsuda,” and it is popular in Japanese high schools and colleges. The story portrays Daisuke as a poor college student who thinks negatively, and meets a girl named Chika, who hungers for freedom. They have quite different personalities, and yet, surprisingly their souls exchange bodies, and thus chaos follows chaos. Will they pass through these challenges? Will their souls go back to their own bodies? This is an interesting play, and it points out many issues facing the current young generation.

Yan-Jun Xu played the role of Daisuke. After going into Chika’s body, Yan-Jun switched to Chika’s role. It was a big challenge for Yan-Jun, since he needed to be familiar with both male and female expressions, and good at acting as a male as well as a female. In Japanese, expressions for a male and a female are quite different, and the most difficult part was to play Daisuke and Chika, who are so different in personality. Yu-Jun Zheng played Chika, and she felt very hard to imitate Yan-Jun’s interpretation of Daisuke. Thus, Yan-Jun explained to her in detail how he played Daisuke; Yu-Jun did the same, so each one of them was able to play two roles skillfully before audience.

Pin-Xuan Wu was in charge of this theatrical performance, Shi-Ya Chen was director, Yan-Jun Xu, Yu-Jun Zheng, Ji-Cheng Pan, Wan-Tian Ji, Ya-Yu Yang, and Jian-Hong Lin were the actor and actress, respectively. Through this play, students had a chance to study more Japanese culture, apply what they learned in the class, and share both with the audience.
