Work-Study Training Session for Spring Semester, 2015 Academic Year
Translated by Kai-Ping Fang
Senior psychologist Chang Hsin-I from the TCU Counseling Center, and Service-Learning Section chief Chen Chien-Chih were invited as guest speakers for the pre-work-study training session.
Chang began her session with a video clip, titled “Recognition from Understanding”. It portrays a medical student passionate in painting, and how he would indicate the intended symptoms, dosage, and time with simple illustrations on the exterior of the drug packaging for her illiterate grandmother. These illustrations are everywhere to remind his grandmother on what to do and when. One day, Grandma asked her grandson, “what do you want to do when you graduate?” “Be a doctor,” he replied. “What if you are not a doctor? Doctors are always busy, would you have time to draw?” Grandma asked. “Even if you are not a doctor, other doctors would give me drugs. But without your drawings, I would not understand when and how to take them.” Even though Grandma was illiterate, she saw things clearer than anyone else. During our study, very often we become confused as to what we can do, or what else I can be aside from the intended course. Chang used Egogram on the students so that they could have a chance to comprehend their own personality, and by understanding oneself, the list of appropriate job selections that are best suited.
“Every job, every service, is an opportunity,” said Chen, the service-learning section chief. Students participate in work-study not only to earn their expenses, but to expand their campus life experiences and to learn one’s demeanors at work and toward others. Work is only significant with commitment. Commitment offers meaning to life and work. Chen spoke of many examples a working student may face in their line of work: students working in the service-learning section are required to wear an ID tag, dressed in school uniform, and greet faculty and staff respectfully. As a working student, Chen emphasized, you are no longer representing yourself, but the unit you are working in, as well as the University in general. There are also much to learn regarding phone etiquette, Chen elaborated. He hopes that every student can learn to listen to their heart, and in turn transform that self-understanding into passion and strength at workplace.
