Department of Communication Studies’ Graduation Exhibition Opens in Hualien, Reflecting the Needs of Eastern Taiwan and the Unique Distinctions of Taiwan

The Department of Communication Studies’ 13th Graduation Exhibition was held at TCU from January 4 to January 6, 2017. The works portrayed students’ experiences growing up in this land, and many of them focused on the issues relating to Hualien. Relocation of the Tzu Chiang Night Market, production and distribution of Hualien’s agricultural products, and fundraising for an Ami’s traditional school were among them. Through this exhibition, students used tools to let the general public become aware of these issues.

慈濟大學傳播學系第十三屆畢業成果展於2017年1月4日至1月6日在慈濟大學圖書館中庭開展,1月4日舉辦開幕式,展覽13組作品中,涵蓋著同學在台灣這塊土地成長的經驗,其中多組作品更是同學在花蓮四年所體驗成長關心的議題,例如以自強夜市搬遷為主題《自強不熄》,以花蓮農產品產銷為主的《產銷間的在地農情》和《糶動之間》,以及水璉部落重建達路岸《達路岸~返鄉的號角》,同學們以傳播為工具,讓花蓮透過畢展讓大家看見。

This was the thirteenth year for the Department of Communication Studies to sponsor its graduation exhibition. Ping-Kun Tsai, CEO of Tzu Chi’s Education Mission, TCU’s Chief Secretary Sheng-Chieh Lin, Dean of the College of Education and Communication Ying-Peng Chang, and Student In-charge of the exhibition Xin-An Pan opened the exhibition. Students shared what they learned. Their works covered social, cultural, economic, and interpersonal communication areas, and utilized documentary films, movie dramas, traditional books, story books, and special reports to express their views.

傳播系第十三屆畢業成果展開幕式,由慈濟教育志業執行長蔡炳坤、主任秘書林聖傑、教育傳播院院長張英鵬,以及畢展負責人傳播系潘信安共同「敲甕」,打開甕的同時,象徵同學經過四年醞釀的知識釀化成實物與大家分享,本次參展的作品涵蓋社會、文化、經濟與人際等議題,包括有紀錄片,劇情片,圖文書,繪本,專題報導等。

The CEO of Tzu Chi’s Education Mission, Ping-Kun Tsai, congratulated students for presenting these wonderful works, and noted that students cared about local needs. He spoke highly of how students employed images to depict each issue so well, filled each story with humaneness and concern for the underprivileged, which they reported truthfully.

教育志業執行長蔡炳坤表示,恭喜同學四年逐夢,美夢成真,作品中看到同學關懷在各種不同主題,從在地生活或是人物故事開始,非常值得肯定。尤其是將虛無的故事透過作品化為影像,非常不容易,作品中發揚人文精神、關懷弱勢,並實踐報真導正的傳播理念。

Sheng-Xuan Lin, Yuan-Xuan Huang, and Bei-Ming Liang were concerned with the production and distribution of agricultural products, and visited director Jong-I Hu of the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan seeking more information. Their film covered production, distribution, consumption, safety, and education about local produce. Sheng-Xuan Lin’s father is a farmer. He mentioned that his father only receives 60-70% of the wholesaler’s selling price, and 30-40% is for distribution costs and the wholesaler’s profit. Moreover, Taiwanese farmers are facing more and more competition from overseas producers. This team asked consumers to buy produce directly from local producers, so producers could earn more. Bei-Ming Liang also said that Taiwanese fruits and vegetables are very delicious. This documentary tried to encourage consumers to buy local produce, and to buy directly from producers.

以經濟主軸,關心農產品產銷間的利益結構問題,《產銷間的在地農情》,由林聖軒、黃原軒、梁倍銘等人製作,拜訪行政院農業委員會胡忠一處長等專家,了解農業的產業鍊。影片呈現從生產到消費、從農地到餐桌、從食安到食農教育,傳遞給閱眾在地農業的知識。林聖軒父親是農夫,所以常常聽到父親談到農產品的價錢經過運費,托工,拍賣,到中盤商在回到手上通常價錢都被扣掉3,4成了。農產品大量時被壓低價格賤價出賣,農產品少量時因運費等成本提高利潤也少,而台灣農夫不只要面對中盤商還要在國外蔬果競爭中求生存。所以製作團隊希望透過影片推廣民眾直接購買在地的農產品,讓農民直接拿到最好的利潤。梁倍銘同學表示,其實台灣的蔬果非常好吃,這部紀錄片不只是紀錄地產地銷的觀念,也希望教育大家支持在地農民。

Jia-Wei Guo and Yun-Shan Xie’s 40 minute documentary was about how auctioneers play their roles at Hualien’s wholesale market, selling fruits and vegetables. This documentary also portrays how producers sell their vegetables through auctioneers to wholesalers, and how wholesalers sell to consumers. There are 47 wholesale markets in Taiwan; four use on-site auctions, and Hualien is the only one which employs an auctioneer. Jia-Wei Guo and Yun-Shan Xie said that they witnessed how an auctioneer carried out his duties when they were freshmen, yet they didn’t understand what he said. This documentary recorded how these four auctioneers stood before producers and buyers calling out the bids and asking for higher bids on fruits and vegetables being sold.

郭家維和謝昀珊同學,以花蓮蔬果運銷合作社的特有職業「糶(ㄊ一ㄠˋ)手」為題,拍攝片長約40分鐘的紀錄片《糶動之間》,片中透過蔬菜的交易,呈現農民、承銷人、糶手、消費者四者之間的關係,點出人工拍賣在花蓮農業的重要性。全台有47座果菜市場,其中只有四座有公開議價,尤其花蓮還是唯一以「糶(ㄊ一ㄠˋ)手」喊價,其他都是電子看板標價。郭家維和謝昀珊表示,大一時第一次到果菜市場看他們喊價就非常驚訝,雖然都是台語,但喊價的內容一句都聽不懂,花蓮果菜市場目前有四位糶手,紀錄片以他們為主,如何在農民與承銷商中取得彼此的滿意的價錢,也是糶手的重要存在性。

“Eating at Tzu Chiang Night Market is a wonderful memory for TCU students,” said Yan-Ning Liu. Jin-Ci Hu and Yan-Ning Liu were very surprised upon hearing the Tzu Chiang Night Market was going to move elsewhere, and thus they decided to record the relocation from October of 2015 till the stalls had settled down at Eastern Gate. The relocation of Tzu Chiang Night Market created many controversies, and it was a challenge for a news reporter. If our students don’t have good relationships with interviewees, the interviewees might cancel the interview appointments at any time, so they realized the importance of having good relationships with others. The night market at Eastern Gate targets tourists, and thus the pattern of consumption is quite different from Tzu Chiang Night Market’s.

「自強夜市應該是慈大學生的共同回憶」劉彥寧說,當胡晉慈和劉晏寧第一次聽到自強夜市要搬遷時,覺得非常不可思議,因此從前年10月中開始計畫搬遷紀錄起,一直拍到搬遷到東大門後的情形。自強夜市的搬遷本身就爭議不斷,對同學來說在這過程中,體會到身為記者的挑戰。「本來約好了,可是當天就突然說不接受訪問了。」劉晏寧同學表示,透過這次的拍攝,深深感受到建立人脈的重要,《自強不熄》影片也記錄自強夜市從社區型夜市變成觀光行夜市後,消費型態的改變。

Xin-An Pan, Yi-Ting Chen, and Yun-Ting Li engaged in local needs, and worked with the Shui-Lien Tribal Hunter’s School, to raise funds for rebuilding an Amis traditional school. Up till now, they have raised over NT$ 900,000.

《達路岸~返鄉的號角》由潘信安,陳易廷以及李昀庭三人與水璉部落獵人學校合作,重建阿美族傳統學校募資計畫,目前已募資到90幾萬,成功將畢業製作結合社區需要。

Students employed a variety of tools to present numerous subjects, from a single individual to the whole society, from upholding principles to putting ideas into action, and from emptiness to fullness. They utilized what they learned to look into stories behind each issue, explore core values, develop a new perspective, and try to communicate this to society.

慈濟大學傳播學系第十三屆畢業成果展運用各式媒介的特點,將呈現不同於商業文化及主流思想的議題,從個體到社會、從理念到實踐、從虛無到實有,深入探討每個議題背後的生命故事,挖掘核心理念,結合自身所學開啟一個新的視野,並試圖和這個社會對話。
