THE (Times Higher Education) pioneered this new ranking in 2019 that assesses universities’ social and economic impact based on eleven United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). TCU does very well in SDG 3 – Good health and well-being and SDG 12 – Responsible consumption and production.

This is the first time TCU has participated in this ranking and it ranks among the top 100 in the world. President Pen-Jung Wang pointed out that this ranking focuses on universities’ social and economic impact by employing eleven United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, decent work and economic growth, climate action, reduced inequalities, etc. These SDGs are comparable to TCU’s tradition, and are also goals we have been devoted to in our teaching and research. TCU is honored to be in 67th place and we are happy that we have made contributions to attend to domestic and global needs. This ranking also reflects our endeavor in helping our students acquire professional knowledge and skills and, moreover, to enhance their humanity.

Universities can submit data on as many of the SDGs as they are able to, out of eleven. SDG 17 – Partnerships for the goals is the only compulsory SDG for inclusion. A university’s final score in the overall table is calculated by combining its score in SDG 17 with its top three scores out of the remaining 10 SDGs. SDG 17 accounts for 22% of the overall score, while the other SDGs each carry a weighting of 26%.

The overall ranking includes 462 universities from 76 nations. Many of them are renowned universities around the world, such as the University of Manchester, University of British Columbia, Kyoto University, Tokyo University, King’s College London, and the University of Hong Kong. Other than TCU, many universities in Taiwan also participate in this ranking, among them National Taiwan University, National Cheng Kung University, Asia University, National Changhua University of Education, National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, Chaoyang University of Technology, China Medical University, National Central University, National University of Kaohsiung, National Tsing Hua University and National Taipei University. THE University Impact Rankings assesses the social and economic impacts of universities across three broad areas, namely “economic growth,” “social development,” and “environmental protection,” rather than focusing only on performance in teaching and research.

Eleven SDG categories are good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, decent work and economic growth, industry, innovation and infrastructure, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action, peace, justice and strong institutions, partnerships for the goals.

TCU ranks 26th in the world in SDG 12 – Responsible consumption and production. To cherish everything we have, TCU provides vegetarian food on its campuses. Faculty members, staff and students don’t use any utensils that can’t be reused, and they use their own utensils for their meals. Moreover, the university gives out used books free of charge every year; it fixes unclaimed bikes and resells them inexpensively to university students or gives them to the needy; it uses fallen leaves to make compost or enzymes.

TCU also ranks 26th in SDG3 – Good health and well-being. From August 1, 2016 through July 31, 2017, a total of 36,000, including faculty members and students, served the community voluntarily; moreover, from August 1, 2016 through July, 31, 2018, the university received numerous awards for its community services, among them “Outstanding school in service-learning,” “Outstanding faculty member leading a service-learning program,” and “Outstanding lesson plan for a service-learning course.” TCU is aware of the impact of drug abuse towards the well-being of our youth and our communities, thus it has sponsored TCU student volunteers to work with various government agencies and NGOs around Taiwan on anti–drug abuse campaigns.

TCU is in 52nd place in SDG 10 – Reduced inequalities.
