While at TCU, he gave three speeches. Professor Chanan encouraged TCU students to develop their potentials to the fullest, reminded them to place the well-being of others first, and to carry out their research to help humanity.

Mahidol University can be traced back to the founding of Siriraj Hospital, which was established in 1888, and is the first higher educational institution in Thailand. Mahidol is among Thailand’s most prestigious universities, and its teaching, research and professional services are highly regarded. Moreover, Mahidol University houses the most advanced medical facilities in Thailand. TCU and Mahidol University became sister universities in 2011, and since then, the two universities have worked closely. In November 2018, TCU’s vice president Ingrid Liu was invited to visit Mahidol University and give public speeches. Professor Liu met Professor Chanan during her visit and invited him to come to TCU.

Professor Chanan’s speeches attracted many doctoral, master’s and undergraduate students. Professor Hui-Chun Li, chairperson of the Department of Biochemistry, was impressed by Professor Chanan’s inspiration of our students. Professor Chanan shared his experiences in planning and implementing research, and advised students about proper attitude in doing everything. Using English, Professor Chanan led his sessions humorously and made everything clear, so our students enjoyed his explanations and experienced a different teaching style.

During his visit, Professor Chanan also met with TCU’s Professor Hui-Chun Li and Professor Kai-Chih Chang, chairperson of the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Biotechnology. As a result, faculty members of the two universities have a better understanding about research endeavors in the two institutions. Professor Chanan pointed out that both universities share the same goal in conducting research, namely the enhancement of health among humanity, and he has expectation of our future collaborations. Professor Chanan feels antimicrobial resistance, which is the ability of a microbe to resist the effects of medication that once could successfully destroy it, is the enemy of humanity. He hopes to work with TCU in the future to study this issue.

Zhi-An Shi, a sophomore in Life Sciences, attended all of Professor Chanan’s sessions. In addition to acquiring professional skills and knowledge, he was greatly inspired by Professor Chanan’s approach in carrying out research. In his point of view, not many researchers are interested in Professor Chanan’s research subject, but the Professor doesn’t care about it. He just keeps moving forward with confidence and persistence. Zhi-An felt so fortunate to attend Professor Chanan’s sessions and the Professor’s advice will be very helpful to him, especially at the present time, since he is making crucial decisions for his future.

Professor Chanan is a Buddhist, and lives in Bangkok, yet he chose to let his children study at Chiangmai Tzu Chi School, which is 693 km away. Professor Chanan is impressed by the common motto of all Tzu Chi schools, which is “kindness, compassion, joy and equanimity,” and he appreciates Tzu Chi’s education, which is based on humanistic culture. While in Hualien, other than Tzu Chi University, Professor Chanan also visited Jing Si Abode and Jing Si Hall for a deeper understanding of Tzu Chi culture.

TCU has made great efforts in recent years to collaborate with other institutions around the world. TCU and Mahidol University are working on numerous academic programs and many of TCU’s nursing students work as interns at Mahidol University’s hospitals during summer or winter breaks. Some Mahidol University nursing students also come to TCU to study.

<img loading="lazy"
