Economic growth is slowing down in Taiwan. Is it better for college graduates to start up a company or work for others? On October 17, the Office of Student Affairs invited Wei-Hsien Lin, the founder of Doers Education Group, to share with faculty, staffs and students about \u201cidentifying global trends, grasping the future, and managing innovation.\u201d He began with the global trends, that innovation and entrepreneurship are the key engines for enhancing economic vitality, and he encouraged young people to think about starting up their own businesses and getting ready for it. Mr. Lin revealed that when he was in the college, he was dismissed by Soochow University, due to his poor academic performance, yet this year he was appointed as chair professor by the same university. He inspired students who didn\u2019t have good grades to believe in themselves and to excel in whatever they do, since life has unlimited opportunities.<\/p>\n

Doers Education Group was founded in 1998, headquarters in Taipei, and branches in Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, etc. The group has over 100 worldwide affiliates. The founder has a special affinity with Hualien, so he set up Sowers Culture and Arts Foundation in Hualien to care for underprivileged children on the east coast, to promote local culture, arts and agricultural products, and to sponsor various education and training programs.<\/p>\n

\u5be6\u8e10\u5bb6\u6559\u80b2\u96c6\u5718\u5275\u59cb\u65bc1998\u5e74\uff0c\u5168\u7403\u7e3d\u90e8\u4f4d\u65bc\u53f0\u5317\uff0c\u6d77\u5916\u5206\u652f\u6a5f\u69cb\u4f4d\u65bc\u65b0\u52a0\u5761\u3001\u9999\u6e2f\u3001\u99ac\u4f86\u897f\u4e9e\u3001\u5370\u5c3c\u3001\u4e2d\u570b\u5927\u9678\u7b49\u5730\uff0c\u6295\u8cc7\u7684\u76f8\u95dc\u4f01\u696d\u516c\u53f8\u591a\u9054\u4e0a\u767e\u5bb6\u3002\u674e\u5049\u8ce2\u8207\u82b1\u84ee\u6709\u5f88\u6df1\u7684\u56e0\u7de3\uff0c\u82b1\u84ee\u64ad\u7a2e\u8005\u57fa\u91d1\u6703\u5c31\u662f\u7531\u5176\u5275\u7acb\uff0c\u64ad\u7a2e\u8005\u57fa\u91d1\u6703\u95dc\u5fc3\u504f\u9109\u7684\u5b69\u7ae5\uff0c\u4e5f\u5ba3\u50b3\u82b1\u84ee\u6587\u5316\u85dd\u8853\u548c\u8fb2\u7522\u54c1\uff0c\u4ee5\u82b1\u84ee\u70ba\u57fa\u5730\uff0c\u8209\u8fa6\u5404\u5f0f\u71df\u968a\u3002<\/p>\n

In 1991 Tzu Chi worked with King Car Cultural and Educational Foundation to promote \u201cEstablishing a pure land on earth.\u201d Lin was a key member of King Car and in charge of this series of events. He later joined Tzu Chi Foundation and took part in relief efforts in China and medical outreach in Ethiopia, and initiated a camp for college students to learn Buddhism and practice Buddhism. The keys for turning him around from a dismissed student to chairperson of such a sizable group were confidence, courage and persistence. He believes that the only way to achieve a goal is to work devotedly toward it. Whenever we have an idea to initiate a business, it starts with setting up a corporation.<\/p>\n

Lin guided students to see what the trend of global entrepreneurship really is. He indicated that the Chinese government is now doing everything to encourage young people to set up their own businesses, universities even allow their students to take a leave of absence for starting up their businesses, and venture capitalists provide needed resources to assist students. While Chinese students endeavor to start up their businesses, Taiwanese students can no longer stay in their comfort zone anymore. On this day 10% of the audience expressed their willingness to become entrepreneurs. Lin said that starting and running a business was a meaningful goal, and he encouraged students to hold onto their goals. Moreover, an entrepreneur can do more for the community.<\/p>\n

Lin said every encounter in his past was to prepare for his future. In his freshman year, he was a deputy editor for the school magazine, and the pressure was very high. While doing military service on Matsu, he was assigned to be editor-in-chief of Matsu Daily News, and in the beginning he simply published other\u2019s articles till one day, on which he found out that he was allowed to write articles or translate English articles for his newspaper or other newspapers, and earn extra income. While his peers made only NT$1,000 monthly, his daily income was nearly NT$ 3,000.<\/p>\n

\u6797\u5049\u8ce2\u4ee5\u81ea\u8eab\u7d93\u9a57\u70ba\u4f8b\uff0c\u4ed6\u8868\u793a\u904e\u53bb\u7684\u4e00\u5207\u90fd\u5728\u70ba\u672a\u4f86\u505a\u6e96\u5099\uff0c\u5927\u4e00\u6642\u4ed6\u88ab\u8feb\u7576\u6821\u520a\u526f\u7e3d\u7de8\u8f2f\uff0c\u58d3\u529b\u5f88\u5927\uff0c\u4f46\u4e5f\u56e0\u6b64\u7576\u4ed6\u5230\u99ac\u7956\u7576\u5175\u6642\uff0c\u64d4\u4efb\u99ac\u7956\u65e5\u5831\u7684\u7de8\u8f2f\uff0c\u525b\u958b\u59cb\u53ea\u662f\u62ff\u5225\u4eba\u7684\u7a3f\u4ef6\u520a\u767b\uff0c\u4f46\u6700\u5f8c\u4ed6\u81ea\u5df1\u5beb\u6587\u7ae0\u8cfa\u7a3f\u8cbb\uff0c\u751a\u81f3\u7ffb\u8b6f\u5916\u96fb\uff0c\u7576\u6642\u7576\u5175\u4e00\u500b\u6708\u53ea\u6709\u4e00\u5343\u5143\u85aa\u6c34\uff0c\u4f46\u4ed6\u4e00\u5929\u53ef\u4ee5\u8cfa3\u5343\u5143\u7684\u7a3f\u8cbb\u3002<\/p>\n

The Doers Education Group has many affiliates in Asia, and Lin insists on employing local people to run these companies. He has followed Master Cheng Yen\u2019s teaching that wherever we are, we are always grateful to the local people for allowing us to work with them. Giving is receiving, and the more we give, the more fruitful our lives will be. After listening to Lin\u2019s sharing, Shang-Ru Wu, a senior in Children\u2019s Development and Family Studies, said that running a student club might be similar to managing a company, thus he determined to set his goal and devote himself to achieving it, and to take action now.<\/p>\n
